LORD ASHCROFT SALUTES BRAVERY

Lord Ashcroft has a near lifelong interest in bravery that goes back to when he was a boy and his father, Eric, told him of his experiences during the D-Day Landings, while serving as a young officer. Gradually, that interest in courage grew into a passion for gallantry medals and the stories behind them.

LORD ASHCROFT CHAMPIONS GALLANTRY

Over a period of more than 30 years, Lord Ashcroft has amassed the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses (VCs), currently standing at more than 200. He also has substantial private collections of GCs, Special Forces medals and medals for gallantry in the air. He has made significant donations to numerous military charities and was a principal benefactor to the Bomber Command Memorial in London, donating £1 million in support. He believes those who have risked and sometimes given their lives carrying out courageous acts, must be remembered. He champions their gallantry in newspaper/magazine articles, books, blogs, television documentaries, short films, interviews and lectures.

The Lord Ashcroft VC & GC Gallery
DISCOVER THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF VICTORIA CROSSES & GEORGE CROSSES

The Lord Ashcroft VC and GC Gallery, which closed in September 2025, was a free gallery located at Imperial War Museum London that for 15 years housed the Extraordinary Heroes exhibition, which contained the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses and George Crosses.

The VC is Britain and the Commonwealth’s most prestigious award for bravery in the presence of the enemy; and the GC is Britain and the Commonwealth’s most prestigious award for bravery not in the presence of the enemy.

The £5 million gallery, funded by Lord Ashcroft, aimed to intrigue, inspire and amaze by re-telling forgotten stories of bravery that showed how, when faced with extreme situations, some people can do extraordinary things.

The Bomber Command Memorial was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in central London in July 2012. It commemorates the air crews of RAF Bomber Command and their repeated bravery during the Second World War.

Lord Ashcroft made a £1 million commitment to the £7 million appeal for the new memorial because he wanted it built while some war veterans, then in their 80s and 90s, were still alive. Even now the fund-raising for the memorial in Green Park, central London, is ongoing because of the need to maintain the monument.
