Ever since 1856 The Victoria Cross has been the UK’s most prestigious military medal.
Since its inception, only 1,351 medals have been awarded.
For over twenty years Michael Ashcroft has collected such medals. It is now the largest privately formed collection in the world and includes more than one-tenth of the medals conferred.
“The extraordinary courage of the winners of this medal inspired me from boyhood. Their heroism and sacrifice must never be forgotten. We all owe a tremendous debt to the men and women who have served this country bravely.”
A temporary exhibition of 50 Victoria Crosses from The Ashcroft VC Collection was held at Spink in London from 16 to 25 April 2008. Please click here for further information.
In 2006 Michael published a book to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the medal. With a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, Victoria Cross Heroes offers detailed accounts of over 150 extraordinary acts of bravery behind the medals that comprise the Ashcroft VC Collection. A special three-part TV documentary to accompany the books was broadcast in November 2006 on Channel 5.
